St. Vitus Cathedral (Katedrála svatého Víta)

Situated in the Prague Castle, this cathedral offers stunning architecture from a wide range of periods. The beautiful rose window can be seen above the entrance on the west side. The cathedral was founded in 1344, originally built in the gothic style. Today it shows elements of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, as well as some 19th and 20th century sculptures.

Prague Castle (Pražský hrad)

Overlooking Prague atop a hill on the western side of the Vltava river, the Prague Castle has been a prominent feature since the late 9th century. The castle structure is an expansive mix of buildings, not the traditional castle style that you may think of. The castle contains many museums and other cultural attractions, including the Lokowicz Palace and the St. Vitus Cathedral. The Prague Castle is a great place to start the day exploring Prague.

Charles Bridge (Karlův most)

Constructed in the 15th century, this important landmark was the only bridge in Prague for more than 400 years. The bridge is guarded by towers on either end which you can climb to the top of for a small fee. The view from the eastern tower grants a magnificent view of the Vltava river and the prague castle hill. The bridge is lined by baroque statues and is filled with street vendors. During the day it is very crowded with tourists. At night and in the early morning it is much quieter.

Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí)

The old town square is an exciting are to have lunch and take time to explore. There are a vast array of architectural styles in the square, including baroque and gothic, from a lengthy time period. One of the most impressive churches in Prague, the Týn Church, can be seem looming over the square. This gothic styled church has an intricate array of spires emerging from its towers. The world famous astronomical clock can also be found within the square. This detailed clock is the oldest working astronomical clock in the world. It recently celebrated it’s 600th anniversary in October 2010. The square is always filled with life, and there is much more to explore there. It is also where many walking tours begin.

Lennon Wall and Love Lock Bridge

Inspired by John Lennon of the Beatles, this wall is filled with graffiti and has been since the late 1980’s. Students used the wall to protest the communist regime. The wall garnered its name from the Beatles lyrics that were written on it, and images of John Lennon. Today it is filled with the colourful paint of expressionism. People continue to paint it and write messages on it. The wall is located on Velkopřevorské náměstí. You can find it by following the Lázeňská road south from the western start of the Charles Bridge. If you continue east from the Lennon Wall, you will find the love lock bridge. This bridge is covered in locks that many couples have attached to it.
